What "blood sugar numbers" actually refers to
When people talk about their blood sugar numbers, they usually mean the results of three common tests: A1C, fasting glucose, and the oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT). Each one measures something different, and each comes with reference ranges published by health authorities like the American Diabetes Association (ADA).
One framing before anything else: these ranges are population thresholds — lines drawn across millions of test results. They are not a verdict on you, and no page on the internet (including this one) can tell you what your specific result means for your health. That's your doctor's job. What this page can do is make the vocabulary plain, so the conversation with your doctor makes sense.
The three numbers, in one table
Here are the diagnostic reference ranges as published in the ADA's Standards of Care in Diabetes:

What A1C means
A1C is roughly a three-month average. It measures the percentage of your red blood cells' hemoglobin that has glucose attached, and because those cells live about three months, the result reflects a long stretch of time rather than a single moment. That's why it doesn't swing with one meal or one stressful day. In the ADA's published ranges, below 5.7% is described as normal, 5.7–6.4% as the prediabetes range, and 6.5% or higher as the diabetes range.
What fasting glucose means
Fasting glucose is a single-moment reading, taken after at least eight hours without eating. It answers a narrower question: what is the glucose level in your blood right now, with no recent meal in the picture? In the ADA's ranges, below 100 mg/dL is described as normal, 100–125 mg/dL as impaired fasting glucose (the prediabetes range), and 126 mg/dL or higher as the diabetes range.
What the 2-hour OGTT means
The OGTT measures response over time. You drink a standard 75-gram glucose drink, and your blood is tested two hours later — showing how your body handles a fixed amount of sugar. In the ADA's ranges, below 140 mg/dL at two hours is described as normal, 140–199 mg/dL as impaired glucose tolerance (the prediabetes range), and 200 mg/dL or higher as the diabetes range.
Why one number isn't the whole story
A single test result is a snapshot, and even the ADA's own standards say so: unless symptoms are unmistakable, a diagnosis requires a second confirmatory test. Numbers also come with context — what test was used, when, and what else is going on in your body — which is exactly why interpreting results is a clinician's job, not a website's.
